Why should anyone gain equity in a home they did not put a down payment on, onwhich they are obligated for no upkeep, and on which they don't pay insurance…? It's called renting. You don't get equity in a home you rent, either. She's getting a better deal here by probably paying less in rent than she would elsewhere, and being able to save for her own assets. Paying utlities is not offsetting the cost of a home. It's a basic adult obligation to keep the lights on.
