I asked for him to stand up for me in moments like this because I can’t always be on edge waiting for his the next time his parents do something like this to me.
He said he would and I want to give him the chance to prove it. It’s hard to earn my trust because I tend to be an anxious person and my partner is a middle child in his family so he’s used to being a peacemaker and going along with things to make others happy. I have a hard time trusting that he’ll actually stand up for me against his mom when he doesn’t naturally have that role in his family to begin with. But ultimately I think it’s only fair to give him a chance to prove himself.
I personally think it's a green flag when someone is able to be friends with their exes. Barring abuse or really messy breakups, a lot of times you just realize you're not compatible for whatever reason and you still have the foundation of a good friendship. It's mature to be able to recognize that.
One of my best friends is someone I dated some years ago. I don't think of him as my ex at all as our friendship is completely platonic and has been for a long time. I understand this is tough for you to wrap your mind around, but please understand that this is simply a matter of different mindsets. You may not be able to fathom being friends with someone you formerly dated, but plenty of people can. It's not weird, it's just not how you personally operate.
This absolutely happens. I looked young for my age in my late 20’s when I met my ex who was about 4 yrs older… had a kid a couple of years later and my 35 yr old ex left me for an 18yr old by the time our kid was 2yrs old. I was shocked and I’m still so grossed out by him.
