1. I think keeping it very simple is best. you didn’t want to take the bus because of your luggage. presumably, Uber is also too expensive, or unavailable there, or you would have ubered.

   I would just say “hey as friends, I want to be honest with you. I was asking you for a favor when I asked for the ride because I am trying to save some money. going for a $600 meal that is out of the way is not really what I had in mind. I wanted to avoid lugging my stuff on the bus, but if the alternative is spending $600, then it might just be easier for me to take the bus.”

   at that point, if he is understanding, great. if he’s not understanding or gets snippy with you, you could ask him “well how much is your time really worth? you are driving me 20 min each way. I’m your friend. you really think it makes sense to charge a friend $400 (his and her $200 meals) for an hour of your time? you don’t charge your employer $400 an hour, so don’t charge your friend that.”

   if he doesn’t make anywhere close to $400 an hour, this should make logical sense to him. if he does make $400 an hour, he should be treating you to this restaurant honestly, whether he’s giving you a ride or not.
