1) Assuage his fears that you wanted this. Make it clear that you didn't purposely do anything to lead to it, it came out of the blue and you were not about that.
2) His insecurities that have lead to his lack of trust in you on this. He needs to work on that, definitely for and by himself, preferably with your help.
