From this and other comments I think the key difference between you and your boyfriend is that you're willing to compromise and make accommodations, and you respect his wishes and thoughts. It sounds like he doesn't do the same back, unfortunately.
In theory, there isn't anything wrong with wanting to go on a solo trip with a friend, and some people in your position would be fine with their partner doing that. Other people wouldn't be, and both are fine ways to be.
Boundaries are basically the limit of how far you're willing to compromise in whatever the specific situation is. It becomes controlling when you try to force or obligate someone to comply with your point of view.
