Honestly, I’d stop trying to make it a surprise for her birthday. Heck, it could even REALLY surprise her and be an early birthday present! 2 more months with the joy and love of the pet she wants so much is worth not being rigid about a birthday present on her birthday.
i think giving her a detailed letter of an action plan of things you are going to do (starting NOW). also, include in the letter how you do appreciate the things she is doing for you and you won’t take those things for granted anymore.
most importantly, you need to follow through on those things. if you write out an action plan but don’t follow through, it is useless and makes you seem insincere and unreliable. if you want her to consider letting you stay, i suggest you put into action things that alleviate some of her burden. it doesn’t have to be big things but since you are staying rent free…doing some chores like doing the dishes, taking out the garbage, vacuuming or what-not would help. your an adult now and these things you would need to do if you had a place or your own anyway so helping around the house is the least you could do esp since you are staying rent. also, taking active measures to spend time with then every week — like a weekly lunch date or something would help for with rebuilding the bond.
