In the long term standing firm will actually hurt both of you less, because when you don't you set yourself up for more cycles of trying to break up, and this takes an emotional toll on both of you.

Breakups are ugly, there's no nice way to do it. The kindest thing to do is, to be clear that this is the end. It gives both of you a clear end and clear signal to start working on healing, moving on and seeing other people.
