I think your best course of action is individual therapy. It seems you possibly overly focused your self worth in your intelligence and the fact that you perceive your boyfriend to be more intelligent is affecting your self esteem.
I had something similar in my current 3 year relationship in which when discussing topics outside of my GFs area of expertise (software engineering and architecture) she got very defensive and would get into a bad mood due to me having more generalized knowledge than her (she is far smarter than me tho). She also had a lot of her self worth attached to her intelligence which caused these conflicts.
Your action points should probably be:
Take your boyfriend out of the pedestal you put him in
Get individual counseling to work on your self worth and why you don't think you are enough for your boyfriend (even if that difference was true)
Take everything I said with a grain of salt, you should know yourself better than we do.
