Personally, I don't think it's ok to date within a friend group. There are billions of people in the world, I don't need to choose my exes friend. If one of my exes friends approached me, I would reject him, whether or not I reciprocate the feelings based on loyalty and mutual respect. I also think it's important to take time in between relationships to process and heal.
With that said, if you feel like you need to pursue your mutual friend, ask your exes permission first and be prepared to either get rejected or cause a rift in the friend group. Situations like this usually make things weird and lead to people picking sides and/or not talking or hanging out as often.
