I'm a woman who has been training in BJJ for about a year now. Like others have said, while you are very physically close with your teammates, it's a wholly unsexy interaction.
At our gym, we have a husband and wife who REFUSE to train with members of the opposite sex. This is their right of course, never roll with someone you aren't comfortable with. However, I've been in a circumstance where there was no other women to train one day, and this guy refused to work with me because I was a woman. Now THAT made it awkward, because he obviously can't see me as anything other than female=potential sex partner versus just another athlete looking to train like everyone else. Making it weird MAKES it weird.
Have him come watch a few classes, should settle his nerves. He may even decide to join!
