As a guy, I wouldn't have asked unless I wanted to explore the possibility. From what you've written, my guess is he asked because he has feelings, you picked a romantic playlist and he thought you were trying to give you signals. You dodged the question initially, then gave him a wishy-washy answer (a bit more isn't very clear in this context), and now he's embarrassed and has shut down which is why your brunch was a bit moody. Probably best to nip it in the bud some time soon and properly talk it through, otherwise things will only keep getting more awkward over time.
