Another reddit therapist saying the boyfriend was thinking more about himself than doing something nice. For all I agree that maybe a brief discussion with the parents before making such a purchase is warranted, maybe surprising the child was the goal and disclosing the gift would ruin the surprise.
You have no evidence to base this claim other than the boyfriend saying he would have loved that gift himself. We all buy gifts for children in retrospect to what we ourselves would have enjoyed.
The parents are jealous and insecure and everyone crying on behalf of the parents are reinforcing their own bs insecurities.
The end result is the same. That kid enjoyed their birthday more with the gift than without. Any inconvenience that follows after birthday can be dealt with. It's not that big of a deal.
