I have a job lined up and I'm willing to pay them back once I gain enough money. We are not poor by any stretch and they're already planning on spending money for a trip of their own this year. It's not easy finding a summer job that could have funded my trip on its own when half my time in college was taken up by COVID. And throughout what they say to me, it's very clear that this is more about control than anything else.
You may be seeing this through your own cultural lens, but families in my culture are mostly very willing to offer money and housing to children until they properly have a job, so there's not much of an idea of “entitlement to parents' money” or whatever you're implying.
