I grew up in Texas and we had plenty of dogs growing up. Friends all had dogs, too. Physical reprimand as part of dog training was pretty much standard. I didn’t see the hit so I can’t say if it crossed into abuse, but for sure everyone back in the 80’s and 90’s hit their dog with a “no!” and it wasn’t a big deal.
