Alright since the point of this sub is not to shake some sense into you (moving abroad isn't that naked, so you may need to rethink your strategy) but to give you advice on relationship, I'll focus on that solely.
I think you should have a discussion together where you need to tell him what you just wrote here (in a less defensive manner). Tell him that this is what you want to try to do for now, and even if he doesn't agree or believe it will work, you're hoping he can at least respect your decision and cheer up for you -even if he thinks you have no chance-, like an underdog against life, if you will.
If he doesn't have respect for you and don't believe you're a good person, why is he even dating you? If you're just too different to make it work, you're just wasting each other time and opportunities to meet more like-minded people.
