This feels like it could be a little codependency. I can only tell you my experience though- because I could be wrong.
I used to try and set boundaries with people, but somehow… it just never worked. They would tell me it wasn’t reasonable or the first time I really had to keep to my boundary they would try to sneak around it somehow, or even turn it into a shame fest about me and my shortcomings.
So I would soften the boundary and say “Maybe we can do this that or the other,” instead of holding the boundary like I wanted to. I love my people so much, and I often end up feeling responsible for them. And I’d give in if someone so much as side eyed my boundary.
First thing to do, set a time for a talk and tell him. Hold that boundary. This is assuming he is safe- don’t put yourself in danger! Back to the advice if not, hold the boundary no matter what he tries to throw at you. And he will, likely.
