What's not to understand. If you believe that classes of people are lesser or don't deserve full human rights, whether that's because of your personal prejudice or because of your religion, you are a bigot. That can't really be separated from how you “personally treat people”, because how you believe people should be treated is how you treat people.
If you have a friend that's the subject of that prejudice and you don't abandon the prejudice, still a bigot. Being friendly with someone on an individual level doesn't absolve that prejudice. This is why “I have a black friend” doesn't mean you aren't also racist. In OP's friend's case, “I have a gay friend” doesn't mean he isn't a bigot.
What are you waiting for? For him to intimidate you into staying because you're too afraid of his anger to leave? He already knows you don't like confrontation. If he hit you, would you stand your ground or back down?
Get out before it gets to that point. Tell him OVER THE PHONE that if he cares for you, then he needs to work on being a better man through therapy. Don't put your own life at risk.
This means you need a new boyfriend. He is selfish.

Facts. Unless you’re actually into his wife his actions aren’t justified
