Men bounce and leave their exes to raise their children all the time – including those who were excited to become fathers at first. If you'd cheat on her then evidently she couldn't trust you, that includes not being able to trust you to stick around and actually raise your child. That's why she thought she'd raise him alone.
She didn't use him as a tool to get back at you. She was preparing for life as a single mother because she couldn't stay with someone who'd cheat on her. Why would she give her child the surname of a man who she couldn't trust? Put yourself in her shoes for a moment.
