It’s important they have therapy because they need a specific, trained professional to speak to about this. The oversharing may be uncomfortable yes but the main concern is trauma dumping can make the person doing it, vulnerable. There are some very unpleasant people out there who would listen to them talk about their trauma experiences and who would latch on or pretend to be a listening ear but use it as a way to take advantage somehow. The oversharing is because they need somewhere where they feel fully heard and contained. I’m not sure if they’ve tried therapy before but a trauma focused therapist would really help with this. Suggest it to them from the perspective of safety, ensuring they’re not retraumatised by peoples reactions to their sharing and that talking to a trained professional will ensure that they are properly heard and contained in an ethical, safe and therapeutic way. Friends and family aren’t able to do that in the same way.
I wasn’t going to give my dog up regardless, just don’t want to lose my gf and don’t know what solutions to offer besides washing the paws after every walk, not bringing the dog over, etc.
