I'd agree with you that it was yours to do what you wanted with it. Just like any gift jewelry would be hers, or fashion brand purse would be.
I would look through subreddits/YT channels to see if there's a good explanation of the differences. If it were really a bike, I'd tell your wife the following:
Bikes are motors and parts need to be replaced. Parts on low end walmart bikes are often built to such poor tolerances that you get half the use out of the parts and other parts you might never need to replace will also be worn. Think 1500 miles vs 3000 miles or 2 chains in a year vs 1. The cost of replacing said parts is greater than the cost of the bike, so you would have to replace the whole bike in a year or so with commuting use, a few thousand miles a year. A midlevel bike will experience less wear and you might replace chain and tires every year with dedicated riding, but the cassette and derailleur will last exponentially longer. Everything will be smoother, work better and make the work more enjoyable, so you are more likely to get 3K miles in.
What's the actual value of the console? What's the cost of the item? What condition is it in? Show her both. Point out that you are trying something better without costing the family any cash.
