A slightly different perspective
I spent decades getting many horrible unwanted gifts from my ex. When I would suggest something specific, he'd shoot it down.
Meanwhile he was consistently ungrateful for gifts I bought him.
The only way I escaped the marriage without hating Christmas was my daughter, who was a joy to shop for.
Fast forward to new relationship. My SO told me upfront that he doesn't buy gifts just to buy gifts, he has to have a good idea.
So many a special occasion has passed without gifts the last few years, but I am okay with that. When he does buy me something, he hits the mark every time. His approach has also taken pressure off me to come up with ideas. If I think of something, great, if not, that's okay too.
There's so many other ways to show he loves you. What's the bigger picture? It could be anything, as simple as always checking your coffee cup when he refills his, or remembering your favorite take-out order, work around the house, whatever.
If he's not just totally worthless, maybe try to appreciate what he does do.
