OP, it seems like this issue has been going on for 11 years. Also it seems like your husband doesn't know how to let things go, there is no point of arguing with someone who is not willing to move on from the past. It looks like you guys are in this vicious cycle. It's almost what insanity look like, doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results each time. It's time for both of you to go on your separate ways. 11 years is long enough, don't waste any more of your time.
I think you got it right when you said its obvious he doesn’t love himself.
I’m not opposed to age gaps per say… but when there is one, I think it’s worth asking why the older one is so interested in the younger. And sure maybe at work, where things are kept professional it felt like there was more in common, or at least aligned values and philosophies… but I think it’s clear he saw you as a chance to validate himself. Maybe a chance to “re-write” his story, or feel some of his glory days again.
All this is to say that this problem has everything to do with him, and nothing to do with you. Since you have to work with him, I might suggest letting him know that while you appreciate that you both gave this a shot, it’s clear that you two need to remain just friends at work. Saying this can give you cover with HR in case he tries to be persistent.
The experiences you’ve had here, only validates your worth, and reaffirms what you’re willing to put up with. So please know that you are going to meet somebody new, and when you do, you will be all the stronger for it.
