You need to talk to him about this. You need to be able to talk with your spouse about the real life stresses in your life, particularly when it involves your actual relationship together.
Sit him down calmly, hold his hand and tell him you heard a false rumour and it’s really upsetting for both of you and you wanted to handle it with him together head on. This is happening to both of you, you didn’t do this to him. You both get an opinion about how you deal with the fallout for your future together with these people.
From the outside, it sounds like he might have friends in other areas of that interest (cars) and is just making use of the connection. I had a friend who's boyfriend was sorta like that when she dated him. He was always like “hey I know a guy who will do it for $xx amount of money” or he would be like “I got a buddy who will get me one for $xxxx, do you want it?” Any time someone needed a 4 wheeler or was looking for an ice house – this dude knew where we could get it for “cheap” or had a “buddy” who would do it for us and “did real nice work.”
Just politely decline and go with your own researched choices. This doesn't have to change the friendship at all. It can be his “thing” and you can watch and not participate. Has he mooched off you in the past? Are you annoyed that he keeps trying to sell you products and services for bad prices?
