True, but what other way do you put it
You don't know he's lying and don't know he's cheated. You suspect he is lying and suspect he's cheated because of his actions being squirrely.
You continually trying to press him on it if he's entrenched in his story won't bring out the truth, if there's any different truth to come out, coming head on at the issue won't get results but something more tactful might.
The only way i see you getting anywhere would be to speak with his friends and see if anyone will corroborate his assertion that it's his other friend that cheated, or start by saying to them that you know your partner cheated and that you know they (friends) know about it and see what their reaction is and ask for their advice, bring up divorce as a possibility and i can bet this will loosen up some tongues and they'll try to defend him if he's done what you suspect and they may drop him in it.
Ultimately, if you don't believe him and still suspect he's cheated then you have to go with your gut feeling on it as trust is paramount in any relationship, maybe counselling for couples could help.
One thing that's strange, if he claims his friend cheated, why is it his phone that had whatsapp conversations with the Spanish lady and not the friends? Dunno how he's explained that away
