OP, I just want to commend you for your shiny spine and the obvious self-respect you have. Good for you. It’s wonderful to not have to read about yet another doormat.
As everyone else has told you it's very obvious he doesn't want to be married. As to why, well that's a different question. I can only speak for myself and while I've never done what he's doing to you (I tell anyone I'm seriously involved in up front that I will not marry them), I can tell you why I refuse to get married and to be honest most guys fall into one or more of the following things as well.
Worried about financial implications should we divorce. This is usually the biggest and everyone says just get a pre-nup but that doesn't protect what I make while we are married.
Doesn't want to be responsible for another man's child legally or financially. Yes they have a good relationship as you said but once you're married he does have certain responsibilities that he currently does not.
Worried that marriage will “change the relationship”. Too many guys see this happen to their friends and worry it'll happen to them. The relationship was so amazing when they dated, then they got married, and boom suddenly he can't come to the bar anymore, guys night out isn't asked, he's going on target runs with her during the Superbowl, etc. Or worse she was awesome and “one of the guys” until they got married and then she changed it all up.
Don't want to “share their lives” in that sense. I know for me I can be quite the emotionally selfish individual and I'm very independent and don't really need to spend time with anyone and I love my alone time. All of that doesn't bode well for marriage. I have dated women very long term who don't see it but I do (and my therapist does). For instance if I want to watch the game, and you want to watch something else, cool we can go into separate rooms and watch. But if you hit me with “oh but I wanna spend time with you” well that's awesome because in my mind YOU HAVE JUST TOLD ME YOU WANT TO WATCH THE GAME WITH ME. And I'm down for that. But then when it turns into “oh no you want to spend time with me so we are watching this other thing” yes that's when I up and leave and go watch in the room.
