He has few outgoings, so has enough to cover things with a surplus, but it's not a huge surplus. What happens is his mother's bills come out of his account, and she'll have either paid in cash to cover them, or they'll come out of his money, and she pays cash in after to cover them. So sometimes, his bills bounce as she's not paid cash in in time. Her bills will have used up his surplus, and sometimes his own money, which is the point where he is temporarily broke. She has bills coming out at different times of the month, it's really confusing which is what makes things more complicated. She'll also use his account for more spontaneous payments such as putting credit on the electricity meter.
I suspect what would happen if he opened up another account is she'd be bouncing payments until she paid cash in, he'd still have to keep everything straight, and of course it'd all be affecting his credit report.
