The short answer is that most, particularly younger guys just don't give much of a fuck about the conditions they live in, up to a certain point.
Leaving the dishes for later or creating a pile of junk next to the bin until you take the trash out, would be pretty normal for guys – because cleaning / tidying just aren't a priority in out lives.
BUT after a certain point, we all come to realise that we want people to be comfortable in our homes; particularly SO's. And we don't want to keep repeating the same unnecessary fights about chores in relationships. So we get better at doing things proactively and become 'house trained' and start taking more pride in our homes. Everyone can appreciate some fresh sheets and a clean smelling home.
For the people with particularly high standards; some guys will never attain those levels – but you'll find a happy medium eventually with almost every guy. The problem is they might not find it quick enough for you to stick around to see it.
