Possibly? But not necessarily. I don't really know how long the virus stays on surfaces or in the air, but it can be spread through coughing and sneezing as well as kissing (among other things ofc). He could have gotten it from someone coughing/sneezing near him or he could've touched something that someone else with ebv touched after they sneezed/coughed in their hand and touched stuff with it.
You don't really have to have bad hygiene habits to spread it or get it, and brushing your teeth won't stop a virus from being spread lol. Him biting his nails could have caused HIM to get it if he bit his nails after he touched a surface that had the virus on it.
Overall tho, your bf does need to brush his teeth more lol. That's not good for him, and tooth and gum infections can be super serious.
