So break up with him. Obviously he wasn't happy with the ex situation and wasn't being honest about it. The only issue is the lack of honesty. The boundary is perfectly reasonable for a lot of people. But its also a pretty good indicator of a lack of compatibility. You can't force him to accept that friendship, he can't force you to end it.
To be honest I feel like Reddit is massively overreacting here, and your original thoughts on the subject, that it was just a high school joke that worked out, were right on the money.
