Seeing as you are in college with a new opportunities to be whoever you want to be, I would start by learning how to set boundaries and be rude or mean when someone crosses you. You want good friends, you must be able to reject bad friends.
Beyond that what you really need to do is just to talk to people. You seem like a bit of an introvert in that respect, so it is doubly important to find just a few good friends who accept your weaknesses without making unreasonable demands of you. And yeah just reach out with an open heart saying “listen I want new friends and I have weaknesses but I will not tolerate those people who see my weakness as a chance to exploit me.”
When someone shows you who they are – believe them. He is showing you who he is when anything else is thrown into the mix like pets, stress, and would be the same with a kid.
