If you said that you both were in therapy, and that your therapist wanted you to remain friends with him – and his therapist agreed – then my answer would be different.
But you’re not. Leave him alone. There are various reasons why a 26 year old would have a stroke; stress is just one if them. That said, he doesn’t deserve to have you inflict any more pain when he’s already hurting so badly.
Make sure to tell his mother about his depressed state of mind, since she’s his only support. And, for the record, “I’m sorry you feel that way” isn’t an apology.
