Well if you make up a rumor like that and get someone in trouble or they harm themselves, you can be held responsible either through a defamation suit, libel, even in an extreme case manslaughter should the person off themself. So yeah making up something like that isn’t something the school would take lightly, especially considering they could be sued also.

While everything you said is valid, I think there is a tendency to obfuscate a darker side we all have within us, “the shadow self”. It’s not ONLY a matter of low self esteem. There is an attraction, an excitement felt by a lot of people in chaotic relationships. The victims stuck in a cycle of abusive relationships aren’t devoid of agency.

This is the thing… Attraction should not only be about the physical. One day your wife is going to grow old, she'll have wrinkles, and her hair will thin. Will you suddenly tell her she's no longer attractive to you? I hope not. Love and attraction supersedes the physical. Can he set up an auto-response voice message or text, saying that if the incoming call or message isn't urgent it will be answered the next day, and if it is urgent, please call or text (your number, a pager, or an answering service)? Let him consider these and other strategies and pick one. You'll soon see if he can enjoy an evening with you without interruption, or if he has an anxiety attack when he's without an active phone before the date is half over.
